Black Duck and North Bridge find that today, and tomorrow, belong to open source

By Lotte Nielsen | Allgemein , Blog

65 percent of companies are using open source for development, while 55 percent are using it in their production infrastructure. Any doubters still that Linux and open-source software rule the enterprise software world?

I told you a while back that open-source development methods and open-source software ruled the IT world. It’s nice to know that what I saw as an individual was also clear to the corporate world. Black Duck, a leader in securing and managing open-source software, and North Bridge, a inception-to-growth venture capital firm, just released the results of their 10th Future of Open Source Survey. Guess what? They found open source is today’s preeminent architecture.

OpenStack’s director: Why open source cloud should be the core of your data center

By Lotte Nielsen | Allgemein , Blog

Amazon, Microsoft and VMware rule the cloud. Here’s where OpenStack’s opportunity is

Six years ago over two days engineers from Rackspace and NASA met in Austin, Texas, for the very first OpenStack Summit. Six years later, OpenStack is returning to its roots. As it does so, OpenStack has cemented itself as the dominant open source IaaS platform. But at the same time, more proprietary offerings from vendors like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and VMware still seem to reign in the broader market.

How to Build a Successful Intranet on a Budget?

By Lotte Nielsen | Allgemein , Blog

Do you want to set up an intranet for your company but have a limited budget? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Let’s discuss some good practices that have been proven to establish an intranet solution but that don’t hurt your wallet.

In such a situation, project managers’ first instinct is to ask if a free solution exists or if they can develop a solution internally. The answer is maybe, but beware—your company intranet solution will quickly become the centerpiece of your IT infrastructure, so you need to ask yourself two key questions:

  • Can we completely supersede software vendors to support and maintain the product and can we ensure adequate availability of this critical tool for our business?
  • Our intranet will necessarily evolve over time. When it does, can we fulfill the requirements of the system and its users?

9 open source robotics projects

By Lotte Nielsen | Allgemein , Blog

Open source isn’t just changing the way we interact with the world, it’s changing the way the world interacts back with us. Case in point: open source robotics.

Robots are playing an increasing role in our world, and while we perhaps haven’t reached the utopian future with robotic housekeepers imagined for us in the Jetsons, robotics are making advances in fields that fifty years ago would have been completely unimaginable.

SCHULMAN | The Best Things in Life are Free

By Lotte Nielsen | Allgemein , Blog

Imagine if New York bagels weren’t scarce in Ithaca — no one would settle for powdered eggs on a mediocre CTB bagel ever again.

Imagine if classes had more seats — that would certainly make this week’s course enroll easier. We imagine a world with less scarcity all the time. Other things, like the laws of physics, affect our lives. But we don’t usually imagine a world where the atomic weight of hydrogen were different — or at least, I’m not smart enough to imagine it. On the other hand, imagining a world without scarcity is easy, and scarcity has a huge effects on our lives.
